Hi Everyone,

I just called the Berkeley police to get a better feel for how worried we should be about crime in the hills. The policeman I talked to was very nice and had a few things to say:

1) There are going to be extra police cars up in the hills for the next few days at least. If anyone hears or sees anything unusual, do not hesitate to call (including 911), but don't wait. Do it right away because there could be a police car around the corner that could come and make a difference. If you wait, he said it's almost not worth calling.

2) Get a club for your car. I don't have one, but I think it's time.

3) If there is a getaway car associated with a crime, it's most important that you get the license plate number -- the make and model are helpful but not at all essential.

Hi All,

Sorry for the spam, but I wanted to try to reach folks that I knew lived in the berkeley hills neighborhood. Our car was stolen last night (old red honda, super easy to steal, we are ok, no worries), but while we were chatting with police tonight, we found out that 3 houses in the berkeley hills were robbed today, including one house (SF police chief's house I believe they said) when the 16 yo daughter was present - they kicked the door down and she hid in the closet while they robbed the place. They seem pretty concerned about the situation in our area. We have been super lazy about security around our house lately, and thought maybe others were too... so wanted to give you all a heads-up. The police are looking for a old bluish Honda with license plate something like "4zebra81" or some arrangment of letters like that, pretty certain of the 81 at the end. Of course, it is possible they might be using our old maroon Honda now, license #2ZKR423.

Feel free to let others know. We live on Olympus, and I don't know the addresses of the other robberies today.

Best,
Sharon

Hi Everyone,

A neighbor requests that anyone who might be feeding raccoons and other wildlife-- either inadvertently by leaving a pet's food out at night or on purpose-- please refrain. Raccoons have been coming into people's houses at night, even when lights are on and residents are shouting at them to go away. One neighbor recently woke to find a raccoon on her pillow, which bit her hand, forcing her to undergo a series of prophylactic rabies shots. Animal control removed that raccoon family (once they bite, they have to be trapped) but they told her that when wild animals lose their fear of people it means they are being fed, and have learned to associate humans with food.

Thanks!
